Long-term metrics systems solve one problem and create several new ones.
Thanos and Mimir can extend Prometheus retention, centralize query, support multi-cluster visibility, and make historical analysis possible. They also introduce object storage, compaction, tenancy, query limits, and failure modes that are easy to miss when the first dashboard loads.
Define The Retention Contract
Decide retention by use case:
- recent incident response.
- capacity planning.
- SLO reporting.
- audit or compliance review.
- seasonal comparison.
- cost allocation.
Do not keep everything forever by default. Long retention with uncontrolled cardinality becomes a storage and query reliability problem.
Object Storage Is Part Of The Stack
For Thanos-style block storage or Mimir object storage, track:
- bucket ownership.
- lifecycle policy.
- encryption policy.
- access identity.
- cross-region behavior.
- deletion and compaction permissions.
- restore path for accidental deletion.
If object storage is unhealthy, long-term metrics are unhealthy even when Prometheus scrape targets are green.
Query Boundary
Long-range queries need limits.
Review:
- maximum query range.
- maximum samples.
- query timeout.
- tenant limits.
- dashboard defaults.
- downsampling or recording rule strategy.
- query frontend caching.
The goal is not to stop exploration. The goal is to prevent one broad query from degrading incident response for everyone else.
Tenancy And Labels
Multi-cluster metrics need a consistent identity model.
Useful labels usually include:
- cluster.
- region or site.
- environment.
- namespace.
- service or workload.
- owning team.
Be careful with labels that mean different things across clusters. A global query is only useful if cluster, namespace, and service describe the same concept everywhere.
Compaction And Ingestion Signals
Monitor the platform itself:
- block upload failures.
- compaction backlog.
- query error rate.
- object storage request errors.
- ingester or sidecar restarts.
- distributor rejection counts.
- ruler evaluation delay.
- tenant limit rejections.
If the metrics backend is degraded, dashboards can show stale confidence. Surface freshness and query errors where operators will see them.
Failure Model
The quiet failure is stale historical data:
Prometheus scrapes normally -> sidecar upload fails
-> recent dashboard works -> long-range SLO report has gaps
-> incident review trusts incomplete history
The operating rule: long-term metrics are production storage. Retention, freshness, limits, and object storage health need explicit ownership.
